About the Book

The book is on the actions of the great little Destroyer USS Sterett and her extraordinary crew during World War II. The recounted action is by Lt. Cmdr. Calhoun who was a board owner of the ship.

The formation of book by C. Raymond Calhoun reads as a good fiction that particularly appeals to military history fans. Most passages in context to actions were quite exciting and interesting. Also, many of the crewmembers were introduced in order to get a closer look of all those brave men involved in running that ship in and out of battle.

Analysis of Book

This narrative story of the Sterett along with her eight hundred sailors has some good humor blended with the horrors of war. Supplements with the author's own experiences such as interviews of officers and enlisted men, ship logs, action reports, and diaries, the details of the Sterett's surface actions have been brilliantly given, like the Third Battle of Savo Island and the Vella Gulf action. Also, another fascinating incidence included in the book is a roster of the ship's personnel from August 1939-November 1945.

Thus, capturing what life on a destroyer must have been like, C. Raymond Calhoun, has interestingly narrated what follows the life and action of this ship from the starting of the shipyard; through its thrilling sea battles, and finally to her decommissioning. The author has given a grasping and interesting story that narrated what it felt like to be there during those angrily fought, unarmed engagements. The book published in 1993 was broadly praised as a good read, full with colorful and exciting details.
